First sod turned on Chinese-Australian war memorial
"The project has truly been a terrific partnership between the local RSL and our southside Chinese community," he said.
"We have been working together to honour the service and sacrifice of Australian service personnel of Chinese heritage through this memorial."
Mr Perrett said the memorial was being erected in the Veterans Memorial Gardens at Sunnybank RSL.
"This memorial will be a focal point for Anzac Day and other remembrance services," he said.
"And through our high school bursaries program we will also help educate young people about the role that Australian-Chinese have played in the armed forces.
"The stories of war heroes like World War I veteran Billy Sing should not be forgotten."
Mr Perrett said the memorial was designed by Griffith University student Sarah Batchelor and captured both Chinese and Australian traditions.
He said the memorial was expected to be completed in time for Remembrance Day in November.
