Perrett announces winning Chinese-Australian memorial design
Member for Moreton Graham Perrett today joined Minister for Veterans Affairs Alan Griffin to announce the winning design for the memorial to be built in honour of Australian Service Personnel of Chinese Heritage in Sunnybank.
Mr Perrett said the winning design was submitted by Griffith University architect student, Sarah Batchelor.
The design features a black granite base, stainless steel bowl and two structures designed to look like smoke rising from the bowl.
"The memorial well combines the traditions of Australian and Chinese cultures," Mr Perrett said.
"The design captures the Chinese tradition of burning incense to commemorate the dead and the Australian ode to the fallen, ‘lest we forget'."
Sarah Batchelor said the aim of the memorial was to remember the past and recognise the significance it provides the community.
"It is important that all aspects of respect are considered within the design, materials and colours used to portray the message of remembrance," she said.
Mr Perrett said the Chinese-Australian War Memorial Steering Committee chose the winning design from more than 50 entries.
"We received many high class entries and I want to thank each and every one of the young designers who gave their time and effort towards this project."
The memorial will be constructed in the Veterans Memorial Gardens at Sunnybank RSL and will honour the service and sacrifice of Chinese-Australians in the Australian defence forces.
