Free driving lessons to boost safety for learner drivers
Thousands of Queensland learner drivers and their parents will benefit from free driving lessons under the keys2drive program, launched in Brisbane today.
Member for Moreton Graham Perrett celebrated the milestone with students at Sunnybank State High School, and urged learner drivers across the state to take advantage of the opportunity.
Mr Perrett said keys2drive was an important, new, national road safety initiative.
"It provides extra incentive for learner drivers to get more diverse experience and assists those supervising them to become better informed and more confident," he said.
"Young people are at greater risk of being involved in a fatal car crash. Despite only making up 16 per cent of the adult population, nearly a quarter of all road deaths are aged 17 to 25.
"I encourage young people on Brisbane's southside to take advantage of these free driving lessons."
keys2drive is aimed at reducing this tragic outcome. Specifically, the program:
- Gives the learner driver and a parent or mentor a free professional driving lesson by an accredited instructor;
- Supports parents and mentors with instructional material and practical guidance on how to provide effective supervision and training to learner drivers;
- Provides an interactive website offering short instructional videos, educational games and the location of their nearest accredited driving instructor; and
- Delivers the country's first-ever national accreditation scheme for driving instructors.
Already the program has been successfully introduced in Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia and South Australia, with almost 880 instructors nationwide now trained for keys2drive.
keys2drive is just one way the Australian Government is working to reduce the number of fatal road crashes. It's a practical way of equipping young people with the skills they need for a lifetime of safer driving.
keys2drive has been developed by the Australian Automobile Association (AAA), RACQ and other motoring clubs around Australia, with funding from the Australian Government and support from the driver training industry.
