Kellie helps secure better disability access to public buildings
"I first met Kellie at a youth forum in Sunnybank last year," he said.
"After that forum Kellie met with me again to explain the need for better disability access standards for public buildings.
"Kellie convinced me that more needed to be done to ensure that people with a disability can access employment, services and the community on an equal basis with other Australians.
"Through the parliament's Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs which launched a review into this very issue I was able to ensure Kellie's voice was heard.
"This review concluded with the report Access all areas which recommended a new national minimum access requirements."
Mr Perrett said the standards cover features such as accessible lifts, stairs, ramps, toilets and corridors and include buildings such as office blocks, shops, hotels, motels and common areas of new apartment buildings.
"The standards will also provide greater certainty for business by providing for national consistency and reducing different regulatory arrangements in different states.
They will also provide the basis for improved arrangement for disability access in the Building Code of Australia.
The new standards will come into force for all new public buildings from 1 May 2011.
