Australia beats the developed world in 2009: Perrett

Member for Moreton Graham Perrett welcomed new figures showing Australia's economy outperformed the developed world in 2009.

Mr Perrett said our economy grew by 0.9 per cent in the December quarter last year and this was now being reflected locally on Brisbane's southside as economic conditions improve.

"These results are testament to the hard work of families and businesses across Brisbane - Australia's economy grew 2.7 per cent in 2009 despite the fact it was the worst year globally since the devastation of the 1930's depression," he said.

"Everyone on the southside can be proud of what we've achieved together to keep the economy growing despite the toughest global conditions imaginable.

"And the results show that that stimulus is still doing its job where the economy is weakest.

"Our nation building investments like the new school hall at St Brendan's Catholic Primary School in Moorooka are continuing to support activity in a construction sector that is still weak.

"In fact across the board infrastructure investment in our schools, roads, railways, ports and housing drove a 10.2 per cent increase in public investment in the December quarter."

Mr Perrett said while these results were pleasing there was no room for complacency and the Government would keep working to ensure the recovery does not stall.

"This is fantastic news for Australia but there are still significant challenges globally, especially with the difficulties we're seeing in Europe at the moment," he said.

"I know our opponents like Mr Abbott and Mr Hockey won't welcome this positive result because they oppose, criticise and try to block everything the Government does but these latest figures show once again we made the right call to stimulate the economy.

"If we hadn't put economic stimulus in place we'd have had a deep recession that would have smashed southside businesses and put thousands of local people out of work."
