Time running out for Apprentice Kickstart boost

Member for Moreton Graham Perrett today urged local businesses to hire a young apprentice and take advantage of extra Government assistance before time runs out.

Mr Perrett said local businesses had until the end of February to take advantage of the Rudd Government's Apprentice Kickstart bonus.

"The Rudd Government tripled the first year bonus paid to employers putting on an apprentice in a traditional trade from $1500 to $4850 over the summer," he said.

"Summer is almost over - so I urge local employers who are thinking about putting on an apprentice to take advantage of Apprentice Kickstart before time runs out."

Mr Perrett said after a tough year the number of Australians starting trade training had plummeted by around 20 per cent.

"The Kickstart program will help local school leavers to enter apprenticeships in trades like bricklaying, carpentry, electrical, hairdressing, cookery and welding," he said.

"My message to local employers is if you're thinking about hiring an apprentice: the time to do it is now."

Mr Perrett said he wanted to make sure local businesses and young people got their fair share of assistance under Apprentice Kickstart.

"Don't let New South Wales and Victoria take places that could go to Queensland!" he said.

"Apprentice Kickstart is directly targeted at boosting the number of first year apprentices in traditional trades.

"The clock is ticking - hire a young apprentice today."

For more information on how to apply contact Graham Perrett on 3344 2622. To be eligible, employers must take on a teenage apprentice in a trade on the National Skills Needs List.
